24 truths for 24 years

It’s my 24th birthday today. Strange. The Britney Spears song I’m Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman seems to be the best way that I could express how it is that I’m feeling. However, after roughly 8,760 days of life, I think that there are a few truth’s that I’ve picked up along the way.

  1. We don’t deserve dogs. They are so loving in our happy days, sad days and every day in between. They are a gift.
  2. Everything is funnier when you aren’t supposed to laugh.
  3. Taking care of your body is just as important as taking care of your mind and vice versa. The way we treat one affects the function of the other.
  4. Be happy with the body that God gave you. The best way to be happy with what you’ve got is to nurture it (see number 3.)
  5. The Golden Rule is not golden, but platinum.
  6. Joy isn’t the best thing; it is everything.
  7. It’s okay to not know what you’re doing.
  8. I am an old, bougie woman trapped in a young woman’s body – cheetah is a nude in my book.
  9. I am also a gay man trapped in a woman’s body. Not sorry for loving glitter and musicals.
  10. It’s okay to stay in and go to bed at 9pm. It does not make you lame.
  11. Don’t eat the dairy if you’re allergic and get sick.
  12. Unless it’s cream cheese icing or cheese… then do it and pray to God you make it out alive.
  13. Life isn’t mean to be spent without a purpose – search for it in every breadth and depth that you can.
  14. Being involved in your community sets off a domino effect of change even if you feel like you’re not changing a thing.
  15. Don’t spend your life with people that you don’t love to do the mundane with. Life finds us in mundane moments all too often to not enjoy them.
  16. Also, don’t spend your life with people who make you feel small or complicate your life. You are not small. You are worth spending time around.
  17. Cliche’s are cliche’s for a reason – even when we feel a little silly saying them, they hold much truth.
  18. People are full of worth and when we treat them as if they are not, we strip them of their humanity.
  19. It’s okay to use one of your PTO days for your mental health. Go get that massage.
  20. Remembering to see people for who they are, not who I want them to be, has radically changed the way that I view relationships.
  21. Pedialyte isn’t only for toddlers, but also adults after a little too much wine.
  22. Being okay with who you are can sometimes make others uncomfortable when they don’t like themselves – don’t take the way that they treat you personally.
  23. If you can’t stop thinking about them, go back and buy the shoes.
  24. Carrie Bradshaw wasn’t as good of a role model as I used to think she was, but I’m still spending my 20s trying to recreate her closet.

There is so much about life I still have to learn, but may 24 be my best year yet.
